Jawline filler defines the jaw, sharpens the contour of the lower face and balances its proportions. I describe what filler does in other areas of the face on the dermal fillers page.
The jaw is the frame of the face. Whether through genetics or ageing, when that line softens the lower face gains weight. I plan the jawline together with the chin and the neck angle — cases where the jawline works on its own, without chin support, are uncommon.
What this treatment does
- Definition. A defined jaw separates the transition between face and neck.
- Softening the appearance of a double chin. When the line is supported forward and laterally, the skin beneath the chin is drawn taut, which camouflages a mild double chin. It does not remove it; it puts it in shadow.
- Irregularity in the lower face. An uneven jaw contour caused by descending cheek tissue reads as smoother; where that descent is pronounced, part of the support is built higher up, with cheekbone filler.
If there is a pronounced double chin, jawline filler alone will not be enough, and I say so from the outset.
A jaw does not always look wide because of volume, either. Where the width comes from the chewing muscle, filler is not the right tool: masseter botox reduces muscle volume and slims the lower face, while filler adds volume and defines the line. They work in opposite directions, and which one is needed is decided at the consultation.
Planning differs for women and men
In women the aim is definition rather than width. A continuous line tapering from in front of the ear to the chin is the target. I avoid excessively wide angles that square the face.
In men the jaw angle is the most characteristic area of the face. A more pronounced, wider angle in front of the ear with a more forward chin is the target.
How the treatment works
- Assessment. Facial proportions, neck angle and sex-specific anatomy are evaluated.
- Product selection. A defined edge is needed, so dense hyaluronic acid products with high lifting capacity are used.
- Application. Usually a blunt-tip cannula, shaping the whole line through a limited number of entry points. Because the full jaw is worked, the treatment takes about 30 minutes.
Because a dense product is placed in the deep plane, longevity is long: 12 to 18 months on average.
Safety and anatomy
The main consideration in filler treatment is placing the product in the correct plane relative to the tissue and the vascular anatomy. For that reason I prefer a blunt-tip cannula in suitable areas, working in the deep plane and advancing slowly. In a large published cohort study, the rate of vascular events in experienced hands was reported as roughly one in 6,400 syringes with a needle and one in 40,000 with a cannula — infrequent with either technique, and less frequent still with a cannula 1. Experience also matters: in the same study, rates were markedly lower among physicians with more than five years of practice. Aftercare
A few simple points on the first day are enough to keep the result where we planned it:
- Do not apply make-up or cosmetic products to the treated area for the first 24 hours.
- Do not massage or rub the treated area.
- Avoid very hot showers for the first 24 hours, and saunas and steam rooms for the first week.
- Avoid heavy exercise and intense cardio for the first week.
- Avoid alcohol on the day of treatment, and do not smoke for the first 4 hours.
- Drink plenty of water; hyaluronic acid binds water in the tissue, which helps the result settle.
- Do not shave the area for the first 24 hours.
- Mild sensitivity when chewing firm food may occur for the first day or two.
Short-lived mild redness, tenderness or a small bruise may appear at the injection points; these resolve on their own within a few days. Because an allergic reaction can occur rarely, treatments are carried out under medical supervision.

Planning your visit
The clinic is in Nişantaşı, Şişli, Istanbul, about 45 minutes from Istanbul Airport. A stay of 2–3 days covers arrival, consultation and treatment, and departure. Injectable fillers need no recovery period; mild swelling may last two to three days, so if you have an event we plan the appointment around it. I do not commit to a plan over messages: we speak before you travel so you know what is realistic, and we confirm it in person on the day. Frequently asked questions
Will it hide my double chin?
It does not remove it; it puts it in shadow. When the jaw is supported forward and laterally, the skin beneath the chin is drawn taut and a mild double chin becomes less noticeable. With a pronounced double chin it is not enough on its own, and in that case a different approach comes first — we discuss it at consultation.
Will my face look masculine?
In women the treatment is built around defining the line upward rather than widening the jaw angle. Planned that way, the face does not square.
Can I shave afterwards?
I would ask you to wait 24 hours. After that you can shave without pressing on the area.
