Frown line botox reduces the excessive activity of the muscles that draw the eyebrows together, softening the vertical lines between the brows and the stern or worried expression they create.1 At my clinic in Nişantaşı, Istanbul, I assess this area looking at both the line itself and the overall expression it produces.
If people often ask whether you are annoyed or tired when you feel perfectly fine, the cause is usually not your mood but the strength of these muscles.
Why frown lines form
When we concentrate, look at a screen, squint in bright light or think hard, the corrugator muscles engage. They pull the eyebrows together and downwards. This repeated movement folds the skin between the brows in the same place over and over, and vertical lines appear — the “11 lines”.
These form by a different mechanism than the horizontal lines on the forehead and tend to sit deeper, because the corrugator is small but strong and works very close to the skin. Botulinum toxin has an approved indication for softening the appearance of expression lines and has been in use for many years.
Why I do not use filler in this area
Patients often ask whether a deep line here could simply be filled. My answer is clear: the glabella is the most sensitive area of the face in vascular terms, and I do not perform filler injections here. This is not a preference but a patient safety decision. The habit comes from anaesthesiology — where the gain does not justify the risk, I take the alternative route.
So how is a set line managed? With a combination, and with patience:
- Regular botox. When the muscle is relaxed at regular intervals, the skin stops folding at that point and enters a period of rest.
- Treatments that support skin quality. Rather than filler, treatments that support the skin tissue from within can be used. The aim is a noticeable softening in the appearance of the line.
In a deep, static line, expecting it to open fully in a single session is not realistic; the process runs over several months.
Who it suits
This is as much an adjustment of expression as it is a treatment for lines:
- People who frown involuntarily and feel they look stern because of it
- Those whose vertical lines between the brows are becoming visible
- People who spend long hours at a screen, since this keeps the muscle constantly engaged
- Male patients — brow muscles are generally stronger, making this the most frequently requested area. Planning for male anatomy is covered on the male botox page.
The procedure
At the examination I ask you to frown so I can assess muscle strength and the difference between the two sides. The corrugator sits differently in each person, so point selection is not standard. The treatment is given with very fine needles and takes around 5 to 10 minutes.
The effect begins within 3 to 4 days — you notice you cannot frown with the same force. It settles fully by day 10 to 14. Duration averages 4 to 6 months. I recommend leaving at least 3 months before repeating.
This area is directly linked to the forehead through brow balance. When the forehead muscle is relaxed, these downward pullers need balancing too; I explain that planning logic in detail on the forehead botox page.
Visiting Istanbul or living here?
A large part of my patients are people living in Istanbul as foreign residents or visiting the city, so the practical questions come up often.
Same-day, no stay required. This is a walk-in treatment. There is no recovery period and you do not need to extend your trip for it.
Flying is not a problem. Cabin pressure does not affect the result. You can travel the same day.
Aftercare
For the best result, a few simple points on the first day are enough:
- Stay upright for the first 4 hours. Do not lie face down or keep your head bent forward.
- Do not massage or rub the treated area.
- Avoid very hot showers for 24 hours, and saunas and steam rooms for the first week.
- Avoid heavy exercise and intense cardio for the first week.
- Avoid alcohol on the day of treatment.
Mild redness or a small bruise may appear at the injection points and settles within a few days. Allergic reactions are rare, which is why treatments are carried out under medical supervision.
What we review together at your consultation
- Pregnancy and breastfeeding
- An active skin infection at the treatment site
- Neuromuscular junction disorders
- Known hypersensitivity to botulinum toxin components
- Your current medication and general health
If any of these applies to you, we plan a more suitable alternative rather than proceeding.
Frequently asked questions
Will the shape of my eyebrows change?
Applied to the right points, the downward pull on the inner brow reduces and the eyes can open slightly. An over-lifted brow tail is related to dose and point selection; what I am planning for anatomically is the preservation of your natural brow line.
Will I not be able to frown at all?
You will still be able to move your brows slightly, but not with that hard, tense frown. The aim is not to erase your expression — it is to soften the stern look that settles on your face without you intending it.
Can I treat only the frown area?
Yes, this area is often treated on its own. However, if your forehead muscle is strong, relaxing only the frown area can make forehead lines more visible over time. We measure your muscle balance at the examination and decide together.
Will it help my headaches?
Some people who frown habitually describe relief as tension in this area reduces. This is not the same as treatment for chronic migraine, which uses a different protocol covering different muscle groups and doses — see the migraine botox page.
I wear glasses. Do my lines form faster?
Glasses with the wrong prescription, or long periods of focusing on a screen, increase squinting and frowning, which means the muscle works harder. Noticing that habit also helps extend how long the treatment lasts.
Can you tell me the price?
Under the applicable regulations, price information cannot be published on our website. The cost of a treatment depends on the product used, the technique chosen and the extent of the treatment. You can call the clinic for detailed information.
